What to Wear for a Photoshoot
Let’s be real! Most people don’t stress about the photoshoot…
They stress about what to wear.
And I get it. Because what you wear doesn’t just affect how you look—it affects how you feel. And how you feel shows up in every single image.
That’s why when you book with me, you’re not just showing up and hoping for the best. I guide you through the entire process so you walk in confident and leave knowing you got something real.
Let’s get you right before you even step in front of the camera.
Start Simple. Then Elevate It.
Most people think they need something complicated.
You don’t.
The cleanest, most timeless looks always start simple:
- Black
- White
- Neutrals
- Earth tones
From there, we elevate:
- A jacket
- Accessories
- Texture (denim, leather, layers)
The goal isn’t to have people notice your outfit first. It’s to have them notice you first. Because you are the star! Then they can appreciate the details.
If It’s Loud, It’s Probably Doing Too Much
Big patterns. Heavy graphics. Neon colors.
They pull attention away from your face. I mean your face is the whole point right?
CLEAN. ALWAYS. WINS.
When we keep things intentional and controlled, your images instantly feel more polished… more elevated… more you.
Fit Is Everything
It doesn't matter how expensive something is if it doesn’t fit right, it won’t photograph right.
Too baggy → you disappear in it
Too tight → you feel it the whole time
Ask yourself: What parts of me do I want to highlight? Do my clothes actually support that?
What we want is that middle ground where:
- You can move
- You feel comfortable
- And everything sits exactly how it should
That’s where confidence shows up naturally and your images will pop!
If You’re Shooting With Others. Don’t Match. Coordinate.
Matching outfits look like you tried too hard.
Instead, we build a look:
- Same color family
- Different pieces
- Same energy
That’s how you get images that feel connected without appearing to try too hard.
Bring Options. Always.
I tell every client the same thing. Bring options.
At least:
- One safe look
- One that’s a little more bold
- One wildcard
Because once we get into the session, we can adjust in real time and create variety without overthinking.
Match the Energy of the Shoot
Every shoot has a vibe.
- Studio → clean, controlled, intentional
- Outdoor → relaxed, natural
- Urban → bold, confident
Your outfit should move with that, not fight it.
This is the part where I help guide you during the session so everything feels cohesive from start to finish.
The Real Secret? It’s Not the Clothes. It's You!
The best images don’t come from perfect outfits.
They come from:
- Feeling comfortable
- Letting your guard down
- Trusting the process
That’s why I don’t just shoot. I direct, I adjust, I help you settle in.
Most people start a little unsure. By the end, they’re moving differently.
The Experience Matters
When you shoot with me, you’re not guessing your way through it.
You’re getting:
- Direction
- Real-time feedback
- Space to be yourself without feeling awkward or nervous
From outfit planning to the final images, everything is intentional. Afterall, it's part of the Rob Johnson Portrait Experience.
